In 2019 SECC will run its inaugural American Sign Language Inclusion crews. Participants in the ASL program will have the opportunity to learn and grow through two consecutive three-week programs. The crews will camp out during the program, working on conservation projects during the week and weekends will be filled with education and recreation activities. This program will be the first of its kind in the Southeast region and will increase opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing youth to work outside, learn job and leadership-development skills, learn outdoor skills, and gain technical conservation field experience to increase their career opportunities.
SECC is raising funds to launch and support our inaugural American Sign Language (ASL) Youth Crews in 2019. We plan to run two three-week conservation crews next summer. To kick off the fundraising, we are riding in the 5-Points-50 Mountain Bike Race as Team SECC. Every rider for team SECC will be sharing and spreading the word of the ASL crew to try and reach our goal of $7,000 dollars. Donations to support this program can be made through our RallyUp Page and you can also support the building of our ASL crew program by purchasing a "BIKE CHATT" shirt or sticker.
Who will be racing for Team SECC?
Our riders, while all competing individually, are currently working with/for SECC, or have felt the impact of our program first hand. Our team is comprised Program Director- Brenna Kelly, Program Coordinator- Aaron Deininger, Recruiter- Sarah Brown, Board member- Cortney Geary, and SECC alumni/Biggest fan Ellen Adams.
Why are we racing?
We feel that riding in this race is a fun way for SECC staff to get into the community, have some skin in the game, and engage the amazing biking community of Chattanooga and the Southeast.
Why The Lula Lake Land Trust 5 Points 50/25?
As a historical and long-term partner of SECC, Lula Lake Land Trust will serve as the primary partner and camping location for the ASL crews. In preparation for the 2019 field season, this race is an ideal platform to illustrate the impact of local partnerships and community engagement to increase inclusivity and opportunities in the great outdoors.
